In 1885, Vincent decided he needed some professional training in art techniques. He enrolled in an academy in Antwerp, where he discovered the art of Peter Paul Rubens and various Japanese artists. Both of these factors would greatly affect Van Gogh's style. By early 1886, he moved to Paris and came to know artists like Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Gauguin. He quickly dropped the dark colors he had used to create The Potato Eaters. He adopted the brighter colors and began experimenting with the techniques he saw in the arts of the impressionists and post impressionists. He also researched the styles found in the Japanese artwork he had discovered a year earlier.

Towards the end of 1888, the first signs of Van Gogh's mental illness began to take hold. He suffered from various types of epilepsy, psychotic attacks, and delusions. one such episode entailed Vincent pursuing Gauguin with a knife and threatening him intensely. Later that day, Vincent returned to their house, cut his ear, and then offered it to a prostitute as a gift. Vincent was temporarily hospitalized and released to find Gauguin swiftly leaving Arles and his dream of an artistic community shattered.

Van Gogh's paintings of sunflowers captivate the mind and leave you astounded in their simplistic beauty. The colors are vibrant and expressive. Bright yellows are suggestive of the full bloom and arid browns remind one of wilting and death. All the stages between these opposites are presented. Although Van Gogh's sunflower paintings are very similar in many aspects, each stands out as its own unique work of art. These paintings are often duplicated but duplicates never reach the pure power of Van Gogh's.

The ongoing debate about the authenticity of various works by Vincent Van Gogh has continued for several decades. The fake controversy has been a contentious issue among art critics and owners. But ironically, it has increased the popularity of the Dutch master. After claims are made that fakes hang in many of the world's leading museums, people are eager to see the questioned paintings. Galleries and museums which became the center of attention conducted investigations into whether the paintings are genuine or not, and some of them released the results of analysis. The fake controversy is indeed as complex as it is contentious and the debate is not likely to wane easily.
